The history of German unity in the mirror of photography

The exhibitions "Umbruch Ost. Lebenswelten im Wandel" and "Einheitsbilder", which can be seen in our atrium from September 28, 2020. The show "Einheitsbilder" presents private photographs and press photos taken between 1990 and 1995. Using concrete stories told by contemporary witnesses, the exhibition shows how the immediate new neighbors east and west of the former border perceived each other, what images they had of each other, and how these images were taken up by the local press and shaped by them. The exhibition by musealis from Weimar is under the patronage of the Federal Government Commissioner for the New Federal States and was supported by the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED dictatorship. The Federal Government Commissioner for the New Federal States and the Federal Foundation for Reconditioning are also the editors of the show "Umbruch Ost. Life Worlds in Transition". The show highlights the history of German unity from 1990 to the present and focuses on the experiences of the East Germans in the period of upheaval. Contemporary images by renowned photographers such as Daniel Biskup, Paul Glaser, Harald Hauswald and Ann-Christine Jansson capture the transformation process. The exhibition texts are by the historian and publicist Stefan Wolle. Interviews with contemporary witnesses by the Norddeutscher Rundfunk, which can be accessed via QR codes, as well as infographics on German unification from the statistics portal Statista complete the information.
